Traffic fines are discounted by 50% if they are paid within the agreed period detailed in the notification. You have 20 days to appeal the fine if you believe there has been an error. If you appeal the fine then you automatically lose the right to the 50% discount. This means that if your appeal is unsuccessful you will have to pay the full fine.
If you are not a resident in Spain and are stopped in a mobile speed check, for example, then you will have to pay the fine on the spot. Failure to do so may result in your vehicle being impounded.
If you exceed the speed limit by more than 60 km/h on an urban road then you will have committed a criminal offence which could result in a stay in prison, a fine, and the loss of your driving licence. This also applies to speeding on a major road although the excess is 80 km/h over the speed limit.
